My Old WristWatch: A Friend Forever

I am always fascinated by wrist watches. Powered by the spirit of shared joy, and extravaganza, the Fastrack watch brings effortless distinction to any occasion, and to me I always liked this brand for its simple design.

In the depths of my cluttered drawer lies a relic from a bygone era –my old wristwatch. Its battered leather strap bears the scars of countless adventures, and its once-shiny dial now tells the tale of years gone by –it is becoming an old piece now. Yet, despite its weathered appearance, this timepiece remains my steadfast companion, a faithful friend from long ago.

I remember the day I acquired it vividly, back in 2009 during my college days. It cost me a mere Nu.2300 after a generous discount, a modest investment for a companion that would accompany me through the twists and turns of life's journey. Little did I know then just how indispensable this humble watch would become.

For me, wearing a watch transcends mere timekeeping; it symbolizes a gentleman's virtue, a commitment to punctuality, and a reverence for the precious moments that slip through our fingers like droplets of water.

As a school teacher, the significance of time is ingrained in every aspect of my life. From ensuring punctuality in the classroom to imparting the value of time to my students, my watch is a silent sentinel, guiding me through the day's affairs.

In an age where technology reigns supreme and smartwatches dominate the market, my allegiance remains unwavering. While the world around me embraces innovation and sophistication, I find solace in the simplicity of my time-worn watch.

As actor Aamir Khan famously quipped in the movie "3 Idiots" a watch that costs Nu.300 serves the same purpose as one worth a million dollars–to tell time. As simple and reliable as it may seem, my watch is still serving me well –a faithful friend. Perhaps, I am thinking, it will enter as a museum piece.

Indeed, as the years have passed, I have witnessed the evolution of timepieces firsthand. From mechanical marvels to digital wonders, the landscape of watches has undergone a remarkable change. Yet, amidst the flurry of progress, my old wristwatch stands as a testament to the enduring allure of tradition and simplicity.

So here's to my old wristwatch, my faithful friend forever. May its timeless wisdom continue to guide me through the ebb and flow of life, reminding me that true value lies not in the extravagance of design and cost, but in the timeless essence of time itself.

Perhaps, the more important is the relationship I have developed for the last 16 years is invincible and so close...

Our King at the Pinnacle of Discipline

Photo: HM's Official FB Page

I have randomly collected a few quotes of His Majesty to describe the humbleness of our king. Showcasing true examples not just for Drukpas, but also for the world. Lived by His words, he is a true Servant Leader in the world.

Every time I get to see our king, I always feel safe and humbled by His Disposition. I feel so proud to see His Majesty becoming brand ambassador of the beauty of our National dress and discipline.

Every time I get to see my king so grounded in every aspect (dress and discipline and vision), I feel delighted, and I say to myself, "What more can a King do for His nation?"

Sherpa Leadership: 5 Powerful Lessons

If you set out to climb Mt. Everest, one of the first things you do is hire a Sherpa.  Originally an ethnic group in Nepal, today a “Sherpa” is the common term used for the leader of a mountain climbing expedition.  In business terms, you are hiring a CEO to help you get to the top.

Thinking of yourself in the role of the Sherpa will help you become a stronger leader.  This is especially true today where leaders must empower their people, not just command them.  As I reflected on the treacherous and risky conditions endured by climbers, it reminded me of our current business landscape and the need for courageous and thoughtful leadership.

Here are five powerful lessons borrowed from those tough-as-nails, yet compassionate, expedition leaders:

1. Your real job is to lead others to the top

Sherpa’s are successful by helping those around them reach their full potential.  The same is 100% true for you as a leader in your own organization.  Ironically, the more you make it about others, the more individual success you’ll enjoy.

2. Detailed planning saves lives

If your Sherpa just looked up the mountain and just said: “Let’s go”, you’d sprint in the opposite direction.  Great leaders carefully plot out each step of their attack to ensure a safe ride.

3. Expect and prepare for setbacks

Sherpa’s routinely deal with unexpected weather, animals, obscured paths, and many other obstacles.  Rather than becoming derailed, they build contingency plans and adapt in real-time.  Do you?

4. Walk with your team

The role of a Sherpa isn’t to lead from afar.  Instead, these leaders climb the mountain right alongside their teams.  As a result, trust is built and success is achieved.  You can’t ask your team to jump through fire unless you’re willing to do it too.

5. Become a great listener

To reach the summit, Sherpa’s must carefully listen on many fronts.  They need to truly understand input from their team, the basecamp crew, and other hikers.  They also need to hear rapidly changing weather reports, advice from other Sherpa’s, as well as the latest advances in their field.  Are you so busy talking that you fail to listen to others?  Great leaders listen intensely and speak thoughtfully.  Quite the opposite of the typical blowhard boss.

The old-school ways of barking orders from afar, thinking you have every right answer, shooting from the hip, refusing to adapt, and putting yourself first have been rendered totally ineffective in today’s fiercely competitive economy.  However, if you embrace the ways of the ancient Sherpa, you may just end up reaching that rarified air sought by many but enjoyed by few.  It’s time to reach your own summit by shifting your approach.

No ropes or helmet required.

Yesha's Seven Birthday

To Yesha, Our Deepest Prayers and wishes

To Yesha, May you spread beauty to the world

This are the flowers and special butter lamp, we offered to

                                   God to safeguard you.

May you continue to spread the love, and beauty to the world.

To Yesha,

Every day without you feels so void, and today we feel even more missing of you. We feel so sorry for not being able to attend your special day. However, we've arranged a small but meaningful celebration for you. Your Duema and Dewa, will replace us unconditionally and hoping it brings you joy and a sense of our presence.

We love you so much!

As you turn seven today, it's an important occasion, reminding us of the immense happiness you brought into our lives seven years ago. Every March 18th is cherished, evoking the beautiful memory of holding you in our arms for the first time, filling me with paternal pride.

Reflecting on that day seven years ago, as your mother endured labor pains, I stood by her side, offering solace amidst my own nervousness and anticipation.

Witnessing your arrival into the world, I gained a deeper respect for the sacrifices mothers make and I know how it feels. Amidst the flurry of emotions, I rushed to gather cakes and chocolates, overwhelmed with gratitude for the medical team's professionalism. I gifted them for helping us throughout our stay in the national hospital (JDWNRH).

On your birthday, I wish for you to grow into a thoughtful, intelligent, honest, loyal, respectful woman, adorned with a good sense of humor, embodying the virtues we hold dear.

We would like you to be a careful and caring person. For you, I have sent a special message to God to help you in every step you take in life.

May you grow into someone who embodies the utmost integrity and professionalism in your career. May you lead by example, lighting the way for your team and your family. May you reach for the stars and spread everlasting love throughout the universe. May all your hopes and ambitions be realized. And may you serve TSA-WA-SUM (King, Country, and People) with unwavering honesty and dedication.

Happy Birthday Baby Yesha from your papa and mummy.

We love you so much!

The Dream Project

As a young boy, I found myself captivated by the exquisite designs crafted by architects and artists. I had a penchant for small things and artistic expressions, particularly in books, where I would spend hours absorbed in images and photographs, especially those depicting nature, landscapes, cultural landmarks, and people, I developed a deep appreciation for aesthetics.

Excelling in subjects like science and mathematics during my seventh-grade years, I always aspired to become an engineer without a much understanding of the profession.

Fast forward, when I was in my twelfth grade, my interest shifted towards urban planning, driven by my growing comprehension of engineering concepts as I was seriously pursuing a computer science stream with mathematics, and physics as my main subjects.

Determined to realize my aspirations, I dedicated myself to intense study, facing numerous odds and difficulty along the way, I did not give up. With unwavering faith in my abilities, I confidently approached my board exams. I was prepared more than to take the exam. Though my results weren't too bad, I applied for scholarships, I ultimately found myself unable to pursue studies outside, leading me to settle for a teaching college.

Embarking on a four-year Bachelor of Education program in Chemistry and IT, I embraced my role not only as a chemistry teacher but also as a mentor and community leader.

Engaging in various social initiatives, including sanitation and water projects both within and beyond the school, I actively contributed to national projects and connected with global networks to support educational endeavors for my school and students.

Central to my teaching philosophy was instilling in my students a shared vision for Bhutan's future, emphasizing the importance of social cohesion and national development. Through discussions, showing them short clips and documentaries on architectural projects, I sought to inspire them to identify opportunities for contributing to our country's progress as engineers, architects, and planners in greater ways.

I would like them not just to feel proud of their work but also to proudly showcase their engineering marvel to the world.

I firmly believed that a nation's advancement lies both in grand infrastructure projects and in the collective efforts of citizens towards a common goal. Encouraging critical thinking and a sense of responsibility, I urged my students to address issues such as corruption and societal challenges, stressing the significance of national service and civic duty.

Now, as I embark on the realization of my dream project, the Gelephu Mindful City, I am filled with hope for the future. Envisioning my students as future leaders of Bhutan's development, I anticipate them carrying the torch of innovation and excellence, shaping the country's legacy on the global stage.

With projects like Gelephu serving as testament to Bhutanese ingenuity, I am confident in our ability to create a history that reflects our values and aspirations.

The Unbreakable Bond -Part II

Greeting Sir,

Plato was right.,. He said be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle. And I find this true now..

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone... I used to ignore this before when someone used to lecture me most probably with a good intention but it's only now that I found it to be true....

Life as I known now is a journey with numerous expeditions, all ups and downs...  Which none can avoid to face with an expectation that coming days will be better...

Have a nice day, sir

The Unbreakable Bond

Greeting Sir,

...but aren't in a position to understand our situation, and are blackmailing now and then because the exam is just around 15 days away. I'm trying my best to get what I can. And what I've aimed at. Something that I've dreamed about...

Seeking a few words from you before I sit for an exam next week sir,...

With regards

 ---------------------

Hello Arjun

Kangaroos on highways are killed without much pity. I was trying hard to understand the cause of their dreadful death. Perhaps, the only penalty free kill for drivers. Rest everything is costly.

I was commenting on my cousin -who shared about "does and joeys" shared on his fb page. As much as we human beings show love and affection for each other, the innocent animals have the same affection and family bonding. And it's truly amazing to watch such a beautiful moment in an animal kingdom like our world.

Arjun...the point I would like you to understand is; it must be because your teachers and school know you have the capabilities to shine and show to the world that you can do well. Every parent’s dream is to see their kids doing well in life, no matter what maybe the circumstances. I think your teachers and school have a lot of trust in you for you have the academic knack. Maybe for these reasons, they must be pushing you so hard that you can keep the school's name ever high. Please take it positively!

Do you know how many times I have felt bad for leaving behind my two beautiful and innocent, very innocent kids far away, just to fulfill some silly promises of securing their future with dollars? Perhaps, it's one irreplaceable time with my kids, EVER.

Lately, I know how difficult it is to be in foreign land. Everything around is new and strange. Every job is not easy, it needs a lot of sacrifice, determination, hard work, and highest integrity. You never feel home. There is no space to argue.

I don't know how many times I have felt unwelcome in the workplace for constantly standing for long hours, people don't feel pity on you. This is life here in a developed country, perhaps our dream land!

The country is great as it was built on shared trust, hard work and vision. People are amazing. They have everything in place. As expected, their work mentality is so tough, they can work long hours, most of the services go 24/7 hours, this is how a country is built. They are honest. They don't know how to manipulate bills. They are straight. There is no room for favoritism, or nepotism. I don't see visible dividing lines between rich and poor. Even the janitor can drive the same car. Live in the same apartment. Shop in the same mall. Eat at the same restaurant, or a café.

There is no free lunch in life. We must learn to live by hardship if we ever would like to see better days tomorrow. Therefore, my guess would be no different from your teachers because they are aware of both hard days and good days. They must have found ‘Ter’ (hidden treasure) in you. They must have seen something special in you. So, they are nagging you to squeeze your real academic gift. Just give it a try!

Shakespeare said, "expectation is the root of all heartache". True to this fact, I have died so many times being in his words. I'm someone who expects so much from others because I work so hard. For that reason, I'm honest, I ended up hurting myself.

Make your life tough. You will enjoy later that you have so much to talk about your own life. You make history. I know you have the capabilities, the God-gift academic merit. If you can't, who else can? Please give it a try. After all, it's just for you and not for anybody else. Not even to your own parents and loved ones. It ultimately benefits you, only you!

Someday, when you cross over all these hard times, you have history to share with everyone around.

I've completed my 1st semester of my higher studies. 3 more to go. And I know it will not be an easy game, nor will it keep me at peace. But I also know it will benefit me immensely for the rest of my life.

It's difficult to maintain a heavy syllabus. I need to balance everything. Work. Study. Exam. Test. Assignments. Presentation. And many other demands to fulfil in a dream land. Sometimes, I feel so funny that I've studied so hard that I could at least share my education for a car wash and cleaning company both as a cleaner. Funny, but this is the reality of life. So long you can work well that's fine here, no qualification, or decorated background is required of us, however, if we have it, it's an added advantage. We just need to be performing and resilient. Hardworking at workplaces.

I'm currently working in three jobs. Car company as car washer. Restaurant cleaner. And after school hours, educator. I am happy that I am spending quality time because I am paid hourly and there is no compromise, anyway possible.

I finally knew how to sweat and squeeze blood to hardship, as the power of $ is immense. $ is attractive. $ is so nice. $ is life. And $ is crazy!

Finally, I wanted to write more but I've to wake up early for my morning work that starts at 7 am. Another at 3pm and last at 9 pm …

My lunch box is ready outside in my roommate's fridge. My rusty boot is polished and dried. My black faded jacket is hanging behind the door. My socks are a few meters away for a quick grab. My car key is near the door for an easy pick. And I have my alarm bell set for 6:13am.

Funny, I lost the sense of looking in the mirror because I don't know when was the last time I washed my face.

Haha… life is hard, and very funny…

Bye
