Significance Of July 7



Guru Rinpoche was born in the north-western part of the land of Oddiyana, on an island in the lake of Dhanakosha; the birth of the great incarnation took place with several unusual happenings and that gave all the ways for people to think that he was an extraordinary being. The birth was said to be accompanied by the blossomed of unseasoned flowers, bright and beautiful rainbow around the place and the sudden rain. Nonetheless, the birth of Guru itself is a wonder as he was said to be born within the Lotus flower rooting to a clean Lake and also right after his birth he gave a numerous mantras and teachings.

 
Marriage and Exile


Guru Rinpoche married the dakini Prabhavati and ruled the kingdom according to the Dharma, accompanying in a time of contentment and peace. He was known then as great King, called as ‘The Turbaned King’. It is believed that as a ruler he unified all people through Dharma and said to be the skillful ruler of the time. At the time of his ruling he has seen many sufferings of the living beings and that made him to think sincerely and he endeavored to escape his life away from the reach of any beings because he thought living in the materialistic world is useless for him and off his several attempts, finally he could escaped his Royal and luxurious life behind for the benefit of all beings.


Guru Rinpoche in Bhutan

Guru Rinpoche is regarded as the second Buddha; He visited Bhutan in the 8th century. Guru Rinpoche is credited to have brought Buddhism to the kingdom of Bhutan and blessed several religious sites. These sites are well-regarded as religious places today, which are now visited by all the Bhutanese on special occasions.


For the year 2014, the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche falls on Monday 7th July.  And to mark the importance of the day thousands of people will visit Lhakhangs and Goendeys to offer butter lamps and prayers. Special prayers across the kingdom will also take place on this day. All the Schools and organizations will remain close to mark the occasion since this day comes only once in a year. All the people believe visiting to holy places will immensely benefit them. It is also believed that Guru Rinpoche has unified Bhutan religiously before the visit of Zhabdrung in 16th century. The unification of Bhutan in all respect goes to Guru Rinpoche and Zhabdrung because they are the one who made Bhutan a holiday destination today for the world. Nevertheless, all our great kings after them.


So, as a Bhutanese it is everyone’s role to know the significance of birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche. Just think if he was not born what would be the country’s religion and the unification back to 8th century.
