Book Review: A House without Windows

.....

 It was Zeba's voice.

"Alone and free of angst and sorrow

I've bled enough for today and tomorrow

Now it is time for my bud to bloom

I'm a sparrow in love with solitude

All my secrets contained within me

I sing aloud –I'm alone, finally!"

I can vividly feel my English teacher's voice explaining about the story titled, "God sees the truth, but waits", in a lovely but sad tone only to make the storyline strong and get into our nerves. Her expression echoes in my heart even today. It's deeper than the ocean.

Reading through the story of Zeba, I feel the other side of the humans is more cruel. For any good reasons that dragged her in the prison is anyone's guess.

The pain of losing her husband is unbearable and dragging her into the prison cell is more painful and losing her family man is unthinkable.

A house without windows is an astonishing story not just to read and leave behind, we must emulate and spread across the society. It is more than a lesson.

Why I Wear His Majesty's Badge– II

Three days old in the new campus. Yet again, I became a new teacher in the old system. I hoped everything would fall in place with time was the only hope I had burning deep inside. Backed by His Majesty's praise for Bhutanese being so resilient and astute, mindful and respectful, I relied on self-trust to build my image again in a new place of many smart people. I would win the heart, or simply lose the race of my career built on trust and hardship.

It was during recess. I met a good-looking boy around the corridors busy lurking with another boy who had a much deeper look. They seemed to be caring nothing, but their existence. I could hear a few exchanges like town, mobile, data, yesterday, etc.

I saw one of the boys hanging "Liverpool FC" badge in his doktha (a small tie-like piece, which drabs the loose end of the front pocket to the other end). It gave me a nostalgic feeling of a boy I met in a similar fashion at my previous school.

First few days elapsed with different engagement –knowing people and the system, planning and meeting.

Only a week later, I knew that I was handed down a popular class since they had multiple indecorous narratives in the previous year. I was ready for the job even if the sky was falling down.

In a few days, everything was ready –classroom, name-list and SUPW area.

One morning, I came across the same boy I met a week ago in my class. He was wearing a different badge "Think Big, Dream Big". The badge looks so nice. I believed in his big dreams. It was trust at first sight. However, the badge was in the wrong place. I was concerned about dying of our homegrown good values. Therefore, with this little hope and moreover as a teacher who carries secret responsibilities to nurture the future citizens of the country to a greater path, I promised to work with the boy. As small as this action, it's a big test for a tiny nation.

We just sat for a few discussions, many things came in-between and our whole conversation ended in an amicable manner. We promised to work together. However, he did not have enough cash to buy His Majesty's badge, which deeply sunk my heart. Indeed, very touching because I know the pain of going penniless. I promised him a beautiful badge of His Majesty.

He agreed with surety.

Hours of free flowing conversation gave a perfect start to our mission. I liked his critical openness in our discussion. I was convinced by his submission that our dream would only get better. On the other hand, I have equally anticipated an untoward situation.

Immediately, I couldn't visit town. Indeed, it was a blessing in disguise to know more about my class members and the boy. However, sadly in between he came to class with the earring in his ear. Perhaps, to me this encounter was like a Nagasaki bomb. But there is nothing wrong with it. It is a newly evolved fashion among youngsters and celebrities, especially with men.

I hanged my temperament outside, in the air.

I took a chance to drive straight to town on Saturday only to look for His Majesty's badge. It took some time to select the best one from the customer's tray. I took the best one to impress him. While returning home, a lot of mixed feelings started to grow in my head. What if he doesn't like my choice? What if he doesn't come to school on Monday? What if he doesn't like to wear it? I dumped all my naive feelings on Mackey's corridors.

Sunday went so well with family engagement.

The next day, I went to school with great excitement. As usual I was early. I did all the day's preparation before morning SUPW and eagerly waited for my students to come.

As the bell signaled for the day's program, I quickly grabbed the class register and went straight to the class area. I make sure everyone is present and working in their respective areas.

As I was roughly checking them, some boys were still coming and few were missing.

After a few minutes, the boy I was looking for came and straightaway settled down for his work. I went near his area and called him and showed him the badge. We exchanged warm greetings. Like me, he was so happy. As I put His Majesty's badge on his chest, over his heart, we prayed for His Majesty's long life and good health. I told him to take care of the badge since His Majesty is so, so special to all of us, and more importantly to all the Bhutanese. He is our role model. He is our superstar. He is our source of inspiration. Please take care and wear it everyday. Lastly, I assured him, the invisible power of His Majesty would protect him in all his actions and bring him peace of mind.

The story twisted within a few days. Third day he came as barren as the first day. I didn't say a word. I kept watching him. The other day, I found him in informal shoes and handkerchiefs nicely knuckled around his neck, a fresh and rough tattoo on his hands. By then he had already been absent for days and even missed several morning social work. I kept observing him for some more days. Deep within, I was burning in pain. After that day, I couldn't find any trace of the badge I gifted him. Despite discussion, he started to portray hard behaviors, few were utterly bitter to digest.

With all these happenings, I didn't lose an inch of hope. I only want to turn obstacles into opportunity. I wanted to help him get on with life because I believe in the value of a good education.

It pained my heart out like bombing Hiroshima, when one of his classmates casually informed me of his plan to discontinue school. It hurt me even more after knowing that he came from an affluent family and even has a building nearby the town and runs a shop. Rest, God knows the truth!

In our several discussions, these things have never come up. He continued to be innocent.

I was made foolish in my doings. I encountered very odd affairs in my life. I felt sorry for the situation between us and some part of guilt is still hanging around my head. Human beings are only getting worse. I only had regret that education is free and these many years of schooling had taught him only to deceive someone honest.

As he left the school, I only wished him good luck in his business and future life.

Declaimer: These are little things that happen in the life of a schoolteacher. Teachers try their best to support students from all walks of life. Whatever, little, teacher won't mind sharing. Goodness of teachers is never seen by society. Hundreds of sacrifices made by our teachers are heroic but unseen. Every teacher assures at the end of the day, they impact each life. Why I Wear His Majesty's Badge?

Although it is completely a personal choice to wear a badge that one wishes. However, it is odd to see wide ranges of badges being worn by our youth today.

It's tempting me so much to share my personal opinion, so I am sharing this as a concerned citizen and not as an expert.

There is a vast array of badges with their own symbol and purpose in the market. Different people wear different badges for different reasons like promotion, identification, appreciation, honor, gratitude, respect, identity, etc.

The badge originated back in medieval times from the coat of arms carried by knights on their left side. For that reason, it is worn on the left chest, over the heart and is a reminder of the pledges or duty to protect law and order and loyalty.

Most people wear badges in formal events like office hours, meetings and concerts. It also shows one's personality and to style one’s outfit in the public space. However, wearing good badges of His Majesty The King gives extra coolness and dignity, closeness and identity. Perhaps, it makes one a more wholesome citizen.

A wide variety of badges can be worn on the left side of one's chest, well positioned to make one look good and smart. It shows one's maturity and well-mannered personality in all events.

However, with changing time and style, especially with our (high school) youth, wearing or putting up different kinds of badges like Korean Stars, English Stars, Che Guevara, Bob Marley, Marijuana Leaf Symbol, World Football Club, Rasta Colored badges have become very popular in close knit society.

Wearing or hanging different kinds of badges that too in an odd place is becoming a cool fashion among youth which is a bit worrisome.

Idealizing stars –is such a small act, yet it is a very symbolic action and it can be seen as a threat to loss of one's own personality, and more importantly one's identity. There are countries and people who don't have any national symbols to call it as their own, forget about the dreams of King and good political leaders, they wish to have.

However, we have so much in place to call it a national treasure and identity. We must encourage our people, especially school going children to wear badges of His Majesty The King, National flag, National animal, National flower, National emblem and scout badges among others, which are worth wearing.

Let me share what I know about the order in which one must put, or wear badges. For all kinds of badges one wishes to wear, His Majesty's badge gets the top position on the left chest, near the heart. For example, if one has two badges to put, one is His Majesty's badge and the other is name badge, His Majesty's badge should be placed on the top followed by the other badge. Similar hierarchy should be followed for the other badges one wishes to wear.

I always wish or love to wear His Majesty's badge, which makes me a proud citizen Bhutanese citizen. I always want to keep our King close to my heart because he is our national hero and idol. I admire him for his dedication and service to the nation. Wearing His Majesty's badge gives me so much personal satisfaction and happiness.

As I love my country, I love my King so much for making us live happily under his dynamic leadership. He is our living God and a savior, a guard and a protector, shield and a guardian of peace. He is our symbol of PEACE.

I always want to carry His Majesty on my chest, near my heart, so that it gives me a lot of power and courage, tenacity and persistence, righteousness and virtuousness in my actions and character that makes me honest in my everyday life.

When I see His Majesty on my chest, near my heart, my sorrow fades away like the perfume I wear. I thank His Majesty for his selfless leadership. He is always on my chest, near my heart as a savior, knight, champion and celebrity.

Let me share one small encounter I had in Seoul, South Korea during my fellowship study. I had His Majesty's badge on my chest, close to my heart. Ready for the day's program. As I was walking out from the hotel, one of my African friends felt so proud of me wearing a beautiful badge of His Majesty always. "I proudly said", "he is my handsome King, King of Bhutan".

Every day of my classes began so well and ended so well, I could learn so much in a beautiful country. On another occasion, other Korean friends and students asked me about my badge, I replied the same just pointing at the badge, "he is my handsome King, King of Bhutan". They all replied in august, "your king is so handsome and smart". I told them, he is also fair and tall!

I'd many beautiful memories and encounters of wearing His Majesty's badge. So school is a good place to nurture our habits as the youth will become the country's future.

In The Shoe of Rinzin Namgyal Sir

Rinzin Namgyal, who served as the School Principal of Zhemgang Central School (ZCS) from 2013 to the end of 2020, is regarded as one of the most dynamic leaders in the school's history.

Coming from the small village of Langthel in Trongsa, he began his career as a Physics & Maths teacher and later served as vice-chair at Jigme Sherubling CS in the east before taking on the role of Principal at Zhemgang CS.

Rinzin Namgyal, a man of few words yet a reservoir of wisdom and great personality has made Zhemgang CS heard at the national level not just in academics but also in other disciplines.

His tenure, marked by unwavering dedication and visionary leadership, transformed the school into a beacon of excellence in the heart of Bhutan. With an innate ability to lead, Rinzin sir embodied the qualities of a true leader—one who sacrifices for the greater cause of his students, school, and community.

When he took over Zhemgang CS, the institution was in need of a strong hand to guide it through challenging times.

Rinzin sir's approach was not one of quick fixes -instead, he focused on small gradual yet meaningful change. With a quiet determination, he worked hard to restore the school’s infrastructure, improve academics, and instill a sense of discipline among the students.

Rinzin Sir's efforts did not go unnoticed. Over time, I have seen ZCS began to flourish under his arm, with some even describing the campus as a "Resort" —a testament to the cleanliness, order, and beauty. It feels good to be around the campus.

Rinzin sir's influence extended beyond the physical transformation of the campus. He was a leader who believed in the power of education to shape lives and futures.

His background as a teacher, and his experience as vice-principal of Jigme Sherubling CS in the east, provided him with a deep understanding of the educational needs of his students. He always seemed to have a holistic view, ensuring that academic excellence was paired with character development and community involvement which I believe is the core for survival in any sphere of life.

Throughout his eight-year stay, Rinzin sir’s far-sighted vision and commitment to the success of the school became evident in every aspect of ZCS operations, -academic, sports, and discipline. He was not just a Principal but a mentor figure, and a pillar of strength for the entire school community.

His legacy at ZCS is one of transformation, leaving behind a school that is not only well-equipped for academic success but also a place where students can live in a disciplined, nurturing environment at all times.

A Brief Background of Zhemgang Higher Secondary School to Zhemgang Central School

Zhemgang High School, originally established in 1958 as a community school, has a long history of excellence. It evolved into a junior high school under the leadership of Mr. Jacob, as the first principal and became known for producing both high-achieving students and strong academic results.

The school, along with other prestigious institutions like Punakha HSS, Damphu HSS, Yangchenphug HSS, Jigme Sherubling HSS, and Sherubtse College, was designed with durable, earthquake-resistant structures, a testament to the vision of Father William Mackey. More Importantly, the priorities of Bhutan’s Second and Third Kings.

The school's distinctive design, particularly its "shining marbles," reflects its legacy of excellence. These buildings, with solid foundations and unique architecture, stand as a symbol of the school’s historical significance and quality.

My Opinion of the School Campus

I had the privilege of serving at Zhemgang CS for eight long years under and along with the wise and farsighted leadership of Rinzin Sir. He created a strong, independent, and wise institution, even in challenging circumstances. Unlike many leaders, Rinzin Sir rarely attended workshops, seminars, or training sessions unless absolutely necessary.

As a teacher I have seen him sharing not just his role but also opportunities with his colleagues to attend different programs. Therefore, his commitment to the school and his shared vision made a lasting impact. Perhaps, I have always seen him as a servant leader!

His Future

Now, as the Principal of Babesa Higher Secondary School in Thimphu, Rinzin sir carries forward his legacy of leadership and excellence. His journey from a humble school teacher to a respected Principal is a testament to his great leadership qualities and his unwavering dedication to the cause of education.

And I am in no doubt that no one would regret working under his wing and I am sure colleagues and students at Babesa HSS are reaping the best side of Rinzin Sir's vision.

I wish him a lot of happiness and a successful life-long journey not just as my boss, but also as a good and kind human being.
