Power of Exercise

As the year 2022 draws to end, there are few breaking achievements to share and achieve here. Although I am not the type of person who really works with new year resolutions, or so, I hope next year will be more fulfilling and worth sharing with friends and families. Despite many mighty challenges and learnings, I called it a successful year.

The whole year has been a roller coaster. In the wake of COVID-19 hangovers, there were numerous challenges but at the same time a lot of learning. We were relieved  from some national restrictions. Lockdown. Face-mask. Hand washing. No movement. Social distancing and no gathering.

My father who is yet to be 63 years old has multiple diseases like high BP, Arthritis and Gastritis. Once a tuberculosis patient and more recently diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy.

Although, it wasn’t easy. However, I came to understand many things about different diseases and their management. I am almost certain of my future if I am less bothered by my health and diet. Now I understand the signs and symptoms of a person suffering from Arthritis and Peripheral Neuropathy because I have someone suffering from this disorder at home.

As a farmer, his life was all about farm work and alcohol. Now he has multiple diseases and with a Gastric Oxyntic Mucosa with severe erosion and active Gastritis, I advise him to reduce, or if possible to completely stop alcohol intake for his own health benefit. What he can consume and digest before, now the same food items became poison. He is aging now.

We have already failed multiple times in this mission because the signs and symptoms were evident in the earlier years too. However, this time his health has deteriorated far more than expected, maybe because of his age. I thought it’s a good opportunity for him and the whole family to give him a clean lifestyle free of an alcohol diet. I tried sharing many ideas to make him realize the severity and damages caused by alcohol consumption. Despite all the advice and trial, he seemed less bothered by our admission. For him -no best cloth, no best facilities, no best pilgrimage, no best friends, no luxury and no advice seems to work.

Alcohol has taken all his life!

Dependent more with alcohol is like a double edged-sword. First it hooks you. Second, it won’t let you move.  Third, it takes your beautiful life. The worst part is, once you are addicted, with and without, both are omnipotent.

As he was having difficult times with stomach ache due to active Gastric and weakened nerves due to Arthritis, it was painstakingly difficult for him to be on his feet. Pain was severe and unbearably difficult with all medication and spiritual intervention. Despite all our effort and advice, he can never be like a UFC fighter and world sprinter, but we hope to give him at least a decent and alcohol free life before he becomes a burden to his own life and to other family members.

For the last few weeks, he was with a few cups of local bangchang. For two weeks, he was fed three times a day and the quantity was set minimal. I purposefully did this hoping some days he might quit alcohol. However, the big problem was the withdrawal symptom. Out of many, he experienced two deadly signs –anger and neuropathy disorder. The latter was more difficult to manage. He experienced a weakened leg knee and senseless feet. There is nothing to worry much, but only if he is active with the exercise.

He has been completely bed-ridden for four weeks now with some numbness and pain around his knees. As I related the whole story, the doctor assured he may be alright after a month, or so. But regular exercise and a good diet are a must. I bullied a doctor on duty for Physiotherapy Service Appointment too.

As I walked away from the hospital chamber accompanying my father, I sincerely made a wish to give him a last chance to have at least a normal life with fine feet to stand and attend nature's call. As I approached the physio room, I made another wish to give my father a last chance, and may he recover to his fitness soon. I am a firm believer of exercise and a good diet, I seek the ultimate divine of physiotherapy to bless my father to recover soon.

Like at the doctors' chamber, I shared the whole story of who and what and why, to a person in-charge in the room. I have immense trust and hope in the centre.

First day was more of sharing, knowing and a few trips and exercises. We were advised to go for a simple 7-workout, three times a day with 10-short cycles. As his attendant, I was given full advice and authority, benefits and the seriousness to forge on this new journey. More, or less, I was aware of all the exercises. I agreed to take it very seriously. Damn, seriously! Sir, I shall train him like your suggestion at home mindfully, more meticulously as after all, it would benefit him. I shall be back a week later.

With immense gratitude and trust, I left the hospital campus but prayed in silence to give my father a last chance to stand on his feet. I quickly left for my duty. He was home for the remaining hours to think and reflect. Back in the evening, I was prepared to make a move. Although, it wasn't easy for a typical farmer and more so for a reluctant person like my father. But I wasn't at all in the mood to give up. As much as it was difficult, I was in a mood to give him a new life and at least an independent life to attend some nature's call, if not full strength to work in a field.

Today as we approach the second week of exercise, the progress was huge and impactful. Almost 10-day down with exercise, he is slowly regaining his health. This is the ultimate power of daily physical exercise. Although, it wasn't easy to manage, yet it takes one's determination and positivity and courage to do things with utmost self-discipline.

I also would like to say that I listen and trust health professionals. In the world of technology, you can even leverage the opportunity to do more than an average for which everything is available online at a cheaper cost.

It just takes courage and positivity. Just keep practicing and trusting yourselves. There is magic in daily exercise. From all odds, you can be on your feet again.

The game is not over yet. The progress wasn't so fast and promising, but we are positive and hopeful that in a few months, he may stand on his feet. We are still continuing 2-time of the suggested cycles with few added exercises.

I cannot guarantee his drinking habit, but there are some agreements and difficult times we have faced together to fight and come this far on this disorder. After all, it wasn't easy to give adequate love, care and manage an aging life.

Of many beautiful and sad moments for the year, this eventful life of my father is something I shall remember with great sadness and pain, but at the same time a service that I have rendered him as a son to a father. Equally, I also would remember the power of exercise and self-discipline in life. This event would definitely be remembered as a year end memoir.

Advisory note:

When such a sad event occurs at your home with anybody, please do not panic and give up easily. Seek professional advice and do whatever possible therapies that are available. Particularly, health in our case is so cheap and available. It just takes your time. I have also tried all spiritual intervention to calm my mind. After all, he is my father!

An Extraordinary Nation

Wikipedia defines a nation as a community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity, culture and or society.

There is no denying the fact our Drupka Land fulfills these international standards. So we are a great nation. Thanks to our National Hero Beloved King –Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck.

To celebrate 115th National Day, the nationwide art competition is a great platform to showcase the creative art and mind of our artists.

Lalith and I, the two of us are taking part simply because there are many unmatched undertakings in the country by our successive monarchs and people. Lalith has his god-gift art talent and I have the idea to contest on the theme. Moreover, it is also time to express gratitude to all the national heroes, culture and tradition that makes us unique and different.

Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and Guru Rinpoche made a good combination to put in the piece for the unification of culture and tradition and other Bhutanese Etiquette. 72% forest coverage and other national heritage such as Dzong and Lhakhang was another nice piece of information. Works and reforms under successive monarchs took our hearts and gave us national pride to express in the art piece. Wise International relations and limited foreign visitors was exceptional. The concept of GNH, Democracy, GYT and DYT, and unity and close-knit family and community were topics that gripped the two of us to include in our art piece.

The two of us spent a lot of time fixing the jigsaw puzzle. However, the good thing is that before I met him, I had already thought over and pen down my rough ideas on a piece of paper to put in an artistic lens.

Lalith, a grade eleven boy, took almost eight days to replicate my idea in the space the two of us have created.

One thing I always dare to do is the fine art. Although I am not artistic and have this fine motor skill, I know many famed artists of the world and of our nation who have created history and are in the hearts of millions.

I always dream of creating a photo gallery and art exhibition hall because it gives good feelings and a sense of good human touch because art is a medium to express feelings as it doesn't require any word to understand. Art is a universal language that doesn't separate region, religion, cast, creed, and color.

I have seen a good future for this innocent boy. There is nothing more beautiful than having such a great time together. However, I assured him even if the two of us do not make it to the top ten entries, yet we have done a great deal of work that can be remembered long after this year. We can just open the door for another day. And more beautiful days are yet to come. We promised to move forward even if the sky shatters the door.

I wish him good luck in his future endeavors!

𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮

Sherig Page

On this National Day, as I contemplate our history, I am filled with awe.

Bhutan became a member of the United Nations in 1971. In 1972, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo became the King of a country that was largely unknown to the rest of the world. Other than our closest neighbour India, Bhutan did not have diplomatic relations with any country.

The Bhutan that we live in today is a vastly different country.

The sheer scale and magnitude of our country’s transformation is evident when we see how we are preoccupied with finding ways to manage our economy, national debt, finances, human resources and institutions. It is all the more remarkable, given that it was just in 1974 when we started our own currency, and found ourselves struggling to staff our handful of government agencies.

Indeed, over the three and a half decades that His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo reigned from 1972 to 2006, we fundamentally transformed Bhutan. His Majesty left us the solid foundations of a strong, secure and sovereign nation.

Our greatest collective responsibility now is to build upon His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s legacy. To hand over to the next generation, a country that has achieved as much or even more than it has over the previous three and a half decades. To leave behind a much stronger nation that enjoys even greater peace, prosperity, and happiness.

On this special occasion, I offer our nation’s heartfelt gratitude, respect and prayers to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

Our National Day commemorates the past, present, and future. It is a special occasion to take stock of our achievements, as we pledge our commitment for the future. After three long years battling the COVID-19 pandemic, we are once again able to come together to celebrate the birth of our nation. This makes this year’s National Day all the more special.

The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented national challenge. We fought an unknown and unpredictable enemy. I can now safely say that we have won the war.

How did we manage to achieve victory under such difficult circumstances? We won because we were united. It was our resilience, our sense of responsibility and selfless consideration for the welfare of others, that saw us through those difficult times.

Places that were unfortunately plagued with distrust and disharmony amongst the people struggled to implement timely measures to combat COVID-19. Fortunately, Bhutan was not one of them. We were blessed to have our people’s unswerving unity, which emerged as one of our greatest strengths.

Our people went through a great deal during the pandemic. We were subjected to mandatory quarantines, prolonged lockdowns, and repeated mass testing. We had to choose between prioritising lives or livelihoods. With movements restricted and businesses forced to close, the pandemic took a toll on not only our livelihoods, but also our sense of wellbeing.

Notwithstanding this, our people chose the welfare of others above their own. We closed ranks as exemplary, steadfast and socially conscious citizens to fight the pandemic together.

Bhutanese showed an exceptional spirit of generosity. We shared what little we had, and readily volunteered whenever and wherever needed. The empathy of the Bhutanese people extended not only to fellow Bhutanese, but also to the rest of the world. We performed prayers across the country to all those around the world who have been suffering and who had lost their lives. We prayed for healing and recovery in the world. These truly exemplified our Buddhist virtues of compassion.

If there was one thing during the entire pandemic that did not surprise me, it would have to be the manner in which our people served and their willingness to make sacrifices for the wellbeing of others. This is who we are, this is who we have always been, and this is who we will continue to be.

This pandemic has brought to the fore the extraordinary strength, capability and selflessness of the people of Bhutan. Bhutan is an extraordinary country.

What makes us extraordinary? It is Damtsi - our unwavering loyalty to one another, and our commitment to our duty, which is as boundless as the ocean.

More than 1,300 years after Guru Rinpoche came to Bhutan, he remains omnipresent. His blessings and teachings are very much alive in our thoughts and prayers, and in the manner in which we go about living our lives. Guru Rinpoche has taught us that all our aspirations will bear fruit as long as Damtsi prevails. And more than 400 years after Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel established the sovereign state of Bhutan, we Bhutanese are still serving his commands, vision, and aspirations. It is as though Ngawang Namgyel continues to personally lead our nation.

I want to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts on our path ahead, as we look to the future. These five things come to mind.

First, we have learnt a lot from battling the pandemic. While some say the worst days of COVID-19 are over, this will not be the last crisis that we will face together. We must be ready for the next crisis that hits us, be it the next pandemic, war, natural disaster, or otherwise. Our greatest lesson from the pandemic is to be prepared for whatever comes next.

Second, all the signs point to a looming global economic crisis: soaring inflation around the world, the strengthening of the US dollar, the US government’s plans to increase interest rates, the war between Russia and Ukraine that continues to drag on. We must be prepared for the global economic crisis that will certainly have an impact on Bhutan.

Third, we have been working hard to bring about the transformational changes and improvements that we need to strengthen our governance and the economy. We are all doing this for our people, especially our youth, so that they can establish a secure, happy and prosperous future. The transformation process has started promisingly only because we have the strong support of the people. Our responsibility now is to see this process to the end and ensure that we succeed.

Fourth, one issue poses a huge threat to our national security, economy, and the wellbeing of our people and our children, and above all, the future of our nation: drugs and substance abuse. We are a small population. Every child is precious. We cannot afford to lose any child or for that matter, anyone to substance abuse. We must not allow substance abuse to jeopardize their future. Substance abuse is already taking root among our children, and we cannot let it proliferate. We must act now before it is too late, and do whatever it takes to eradicate this threat. Failure is not an option.

Fifth, the manner in which we Bhutanese worked to protect the nation during the pandemic was truly incredible. I witnessed firsthand the concerted efforts and single minded dedication of our people at all levels, in all our twenty dzongkhags. I could not help but think that if we kept up the momentum, we might just be able to achieve all our goals and aspirations. If we were to choose to fight the threat of drug abuse with the same zeal as we fought the pandemic, I am very sure we would succeed.

Indeed, once we Bhutanese set our minds on something, we will definitely accomplish it. It is said that we only know our true strength when we have a burden to bear. The pandemic was one such heavy burden, and we bore it exceptionally well. This shows that once we put our minds together, there is nothing we cannot do.

As long as we continue to work together with single-minded devotion, we will secure the future of our nation.

Vegan Diet –The Tale Tell

bbs.bt

I am not surprised with the recent article by Kuensel dated 18th of December titled as: 27% of Bhutanese households cannot afford nutritious food, finds WFP report, picking up some national concern.

This topic picked quite a lot of criticism from the educated section with sound knowledge on health and wealth, nutrition and diet. There is one thing certain from the study report –the inadequate assessment, or simply ridiculous report without good baseline data to support the 27% underrated Bhutanese households without much good and nutritious food. The data could be more correct if otherwise stated as –27% of Bhutanese households can only afford nutritious food

However,  the cost of vegetables and fruits are higher in all vegetable markets by vendors. The trend can be changed only with a good and reliable monitoring system in place. Looks like our vendors are too greedy and creepy with the cost, they are simply extracting us penny-by-penny.

Someone expressed that it is time to fix certain reliable rates to vendors by the concerned authority, otherwise this problem won't be solved. Although, everything goes with the market force, there is always room for check and balance and weighing the market rates from place to place and time to time can go a long way to help each consumer.

Let me share my assumption theory based on experience and what I have seen and eaten at my home as a child. The data released by WFP was a bit ambiguous in nature because we know what each household and family, friends and relatives consume for their meals. We are a close-knit society and we know what next door curry is and what they are consuming for their survival.

It isn’t easy to live on a diet of vegetables and fruits. Our pallets are customed differently. Our taste buds are different. Our traditions are different. Our consumption pattern is different. Our preparation methods are different. Our timing is different. Likewise, we have different menus and accordingly we shop and spend our money.

It has been more than a decade now that I am consuming less, or no rice diet for all three meals. With much practice, determination and sacrifice, now I can survive without a rice diet. After all, for a boy who has come from a family who has never been on a vegetable and fruit diet, it doesn’t come so easily!

For the past many years, whether it is good, or bad, I have lived with more vegetables, fruits and soup items than the rice diet. I have personally seen a huge impact especially in cutting off belly fats, and body fitness. Although I am not perfect in health, I have seen many good benefits from a vegetable and fruit diet. One thing is certain with this –you need to make a huge sacrifice in terms of cash and mindset.

Just a few days back I raised my discussion with my ailing father who is with me currently for his medical check up. He is medically unfit to consume red and fatty meats. Except for some occasional wet fish soup, he needs to stay strong with a vegetable and fruit diet. Therefore, I make a point to get him some fresh and green vegetables and fruits as long as he likes the new menu. Two days before, I bought him a new fruit item by name –Dragon Fruit, its new fruit in our market although the existence has long been there in some other countries.

To supplement his weakened nerves, I sliced half of one Dragon fruit and placed it in front of him. It was the very first time that he had seen the fruit. Forget about the taste, he never heard the name of this fruit. How bad is our diet for someone who has lived life with a rice diet. And amazingly the WFP report stated otherwise.

It took my good time and energy to explain to him about the fruit and its existence and more importantly the health benefits. I have to impress him because he needed a good and rich B-Complex supplement for his multiple diseases.

The other day I was quizzically supplying him with a fresh apple. He raised his eyebrow and asked, how can I survive with an apple slice. I have to subdue him with good reasoning because he needs a lot of energy giving fruits and vegetables. I know how good apple and Dragon fruits are for health benefits and more. However, he did not know how much I was spending my hard-earned money on those fruits. All kinds of vegetables are expensive, fruits are more costly!

I personally feel the WFP report needs relook, or more authentic reasons to back 27% is anyway correct for now. If the data was around 70% and above who cannot afford vegetables and fruits rich in nutrition, I can have a peaceful sleep.

More than the health benefit, the cost of our vegetables and fruit are making our diet poor. For a beggar, filling a belly is more important than looking for healthy food. There is no time to think about nutrition in the uncertain battle of survival.

And we all have similar stories, the rest is a mystery!

115th National Day: A Water Tank Gift

It's a national day. One big day for Bhutan and Bhutanese to reflect and to forge a new journey.

The National Day is a big day for all of us, for each Bhutanese. On this day 115 years ago, our Great Hero Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck, the founding father of Bhutan unified the country from all evils and external forces. It was on this day, the Hereditary Monarchy was established and the country came under Wangchuck Dynasty.

This day is also a day to remember and thank our first Monarch and successive kingship for their sacrifice for this land and for making each one of us safe and proud Bhutanese citizens. Like our brave monarchs we should also learn to sacrifice for the country and it is a reminder to each one of us for how bravely our first king has unified this nation. Therefore, we must love our country, but honestly and intelligently!

My 115th National Day was a bit different for the second time. First in 2019, I was busy fixing a toilet pot for my students when the rest were ushering in the national day in a remote corner of Zhemgang. The same evening I was engaged in listening to the rebroadcast of His Majesty’s National Day Speech.

Undoubtedly, I fell in love with HM's Dzongkha, the eloquence, the meaning, the beauty, the richness, and overall, it was a joy to listen to a beautiful speech for the country and people by our beloved monarch.

This year was no different. I was having a long pending work for the project I was undertaking. The construction of a small water tank for SAP activities. Often I was left with doubt that I may disappoint my foreign donors and other people involved to get this deal.

There was no day and moment I was at peace. Despite giving a hard try, everyday I worry about completing the project. There was no day I was without any burning task in hand –teaching, planning, counselling, gathering, meeting, and other personal engagements.

However, just to give a final touch to my project , and to make it memorable on this big day, I planned to escape my national day celebration at the Damphu Public Ground. Although I was missing the live celebration and HM's National Day Speech, I am making history for myself and it may become my year's national achievement.

I was expecting for a rebroadcast on tv, social media platforms and in print media.  For these assurances, I just diverted my attention to give a final touch to my project. As much as I am missing the live celebration, I am making history, history for myself and for my school. I believe this is nation building!

Let me share a few reasons why this project was delayed till the last month of the year. First, the project came at a time when the country is regaining momentum from COVID. Second, the collection of raw materials came handy. Third, the actual expertise was lacking to materialize the project. Fourth, Tsirang being at the southern belt, summer becomes heavy with rain, which somehow have deterred the construction. Fifth, being a teacher myself I was heavily being used for teaching and other administrative work. Sixth, almost all the Saturdays and Sundays were packed with online training for Bhutan Baccalaureate (BB). Seventh, getting someone (laborers) who can handle the concrete construction was difficult. Eighth, I was engaged with some personal matters at home. Ninth, I was medically unfit due to severe back pain which made my presence often difficult.

With prayers and wishes, I sincerely dedicate my small project to our greatest National Hero Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck and successive monarchs for their selfless leadership, sacrifice and power for making us one nation.

On this day, 115 years ago, on December 17th 1907, our first King made a history by unifying this Drukpa Land, and today on 17th of December 2022, I am making my small contribution to remember and thank our brave and national hero, our King Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck. This is a day we must come together to deeply reflect the great work done by our successive kings.

Pelden Drukpa Gyalo la...May this nation be always like today and may this nation be always under the visionary kings and may this nation remain happy and peaceful...

Face–to–face With S.G –Part IV

Image: Google

My decade of service in education as a teacher has been both beautiful and demanding.

However, nothing significant has changed over the years despite a lot of push from government and relevant agencies. We are in the same old building, classrooms, assembly ground, labs, library, hostel and dining hall.

Summer goes by in the heat, sweating without a good working room fan, and winter is more severe with the broken windows and doors.

In such circumstances, students have all killer plans making them susceptible to smoking, drinking, chewing and other unproductive activities.

What compelled me to discuss this matter is due to some odd behaviors and manners I have seen over the years. We have His Majesty The King, His Holiness The Je Khenpo, and other National Symbols, yet our children idolizing Bob Marley, Marijuana Leave, and Rasta Colors define our weakness.

Arguably, Bob Marley, the most influential figure, was equally known for his love of Cannabis and Rastafarian faith. I am against all these cultures. One thing I know about is the one with this habit is the one who uses Marijuana and in most cases happens to be an addict.

If you happen to see anyone with a Rasta Color handkerchief, belt (kera), muffler, hat, shirt, arm band, and badges, they are into this cool-looking-kid circle. There are few exceptional cases at school, students using Rasta color (red, green and yellow) mixed sellotape to cover their books, you must follow their footsteps and watch them accordingly. It is a sign of Marijuana addict!

Face–to–Face with S.G –Part III

From listener to a user today –smoking of Marijuana is becoming a trend now and looks like it is going to remain forever.

After the introduction of television in the year 1999, Bhutanese have had access and were bombarded with many foreign contents. There is no less denying fact than to consume whatever is made available on television. Now is the era of the Internet and smartphones, there is no looking back.

The use of these grass plants dates back to around 2800 BC, when it was listed in the Emperor Shen Nung's pharmacopoeia and set to be originated from Asian nations. Cannabis has been used for its alleged healing properties for millennia. And in some parts of the world, the plant is used for religious purposes and more. Given its demands world-wide, the sale of the plant benefits many poor sections of society for their livelihood.

This plant is truly a gift of nature!

The first time I heard about this plant was when my mother used it to subdue the pig from its madness. She occasionally administered these raw techniques to put some naughty pig into a long good night sleep. It not only makes them lazy, but also helps them gain weight because it improves appetite. This could be one reason our youngsters wanted to experience and be like that lazy hog but only to find themselves addicted.

There is no concrete data, or finding on when the usage of this plant actually started in the country. There is some oral information that it must have started from early 2000. With little findings, the popularity of this plant became popular once television was introduced in the country. Undoubtedly, this trend is becoming a fashion especially among our youngsters. It could be due to peer pressure, or influence.

Besides smoking and drinking, this plant is one of the highest used drugs among adolescents (around 12%). I am pretty sure, this figure could be even higher.

Going by report, or response from many students, the cool kid fashion to boost confidence to relieve some acute pain to overcome anxiety to be in a friend circle, cannabis abuse is a worrying trend.

Without knowing much, at a larger spectrum, this habit would simply cost the government in meeting up with growing demand on mental health related issues.

Present trend is already worrisome for the fact that many of our school-going adolescents are addicted. Beside smoking weeds, there are around 60-70% of our young kids who are into smoking, drinking, chewing tobacco and consuming other deadly tablets. The Doma and Supari fashion is another picking up trend amongst our youth.

Each year schools across the country are facing a huge crisis of our young and abled-children dropping out of school. The bigger reason cited was due to addiction to drugs and alcohol. In this figure, I am sure there are just a few exceptional cases of family background compelling them to quit their education.
