Beyond Medal and Certificate

On Saturday, May 10, my sister-in-law told us about our daughter's Annual School Sports Day. We're both excited and nervous. Excited that our daughter is taking her steps forward beyond classroom walls and nervous about "IF'S", "if she doesn't win", if she comes first, or last! However, I'm hopeful about her participation.

The news of our beloved daughter, Our Yesha coming 3rd in the "Shoe Race" honestly made us feel happy, overjoyed, and perhaps, proud!

Just before taking a race, watching the videos my sister-in-law shared, I could only see her nervousness. Competing on the track with strong opponents isn't easy, but she did it and won a medal, which is perhaps amazing for her age.

As parents, we're filled with joy, not just because of the medal and certificate, but because she was engaged in something beyond classroom learning.

I believe activities like these, which involve play, discipline, and physical effort, are essential for every child's learning journey. They help not just shape individual character, but build resilience and teach values like determination, perseverance, teamwork, and more importantly, FAILURE!

This is just the beginning, but she's already making her mark in the world beyond the four corners of the wall, and I'm already so proud of her.

I hope she continues to grow into a capable individual not just in her academics, but grounded in wholesome education and overall a good human being.

I hope every single parent encourages and supports their children in such activities. In the end, it's not about winning, but about learning, growing, becoming, and failing. More than just winning, FAILING has to be the part of life and learning.

                                                                       ----------

"As I celebrate my daughter's achievement, it brings back many nostalgic memories from my own school days. I remember participating in events, the thrill of winning, the disappointment of losing, the importance of teamwork and the mix of emotions, the pain. The determination. The shame, and the guilt. I'm sure my daughter must've felt some of these same emotions too."

At the end of the day, we congratulated her for achieving the medal and certificate.

I reminded her a few things (although, she is still too young to understand, but I did it sincerely, she will and must prepare for this part of her life). I told her I'm so proud of her achievement, but beyond that I warned her, coming first, second or third is not the end or considered as the best. There is still room to become better. I told her, did she prepare for it, if she were not in the top three positions. How did she react? How did she feel if she was in fourth, fifth, or LAST position, or if she hadn't completed the race?

I warned her of all the possible realities of life. By and large, I want her to become resilient and accept the failure or defeat in life. I mean failure has to be a part of everyday life. One time you win and the next moment you are gone, nowhere to be seen, or counted. Life is not always a bed of roses, in fact, it's a with mixed of everything -failure, success, happiness, etc.,,,

Towards the end, I sincerely thanked my sister-in-law, brother, little Reva, brother (Rewang), and cousins for standing by our daughter's side. Together, we can win everything! I feel our Yesha won a collective medal and certificate and made all of us proud, and happy. Thank you all!!!
